How Does It Work? A Few Examples Effects of Ego Depletion Controversy What Can You Do? View All Back To Top Think about how you feel after a long, busy day. After running errands, working on projects, and rushing to appointments, do you still feel like you have the energy to work on your goals? Once the day was done, you probably want to collapse in front of the TV and avoid doing anything at all. The reason you might find yourself so exhausted and burned out after a hard day can be influenced by what psychologists refer to as the ego-depletion effect. What Is Ego Depletion? Ego depletion happens when people use up their available willpower on one task. As a result, they are unable to exert the same level of self-control on subsequent, often unrelated tasks. Willpower is a limited resource. The idea behind this theory is that willpower is like a muscle in that it can be both strengthened and fatigued. For example, if you exhaust yourself doing sprints, you will be less able to perform other physical tasks. Research suggests that willpower and self-control are much the same. If you use your available energy and reach a state of ego depletion, you will have less self-control when faced with ensuing tasks. Self-control is important. Having good self-control is beneficial in a number of ways. People who possess high levels of self-control tend to have better relationships and higher achievement levels. Those who lack self-control, on the other hand, are more likely to experience social conflict and poor academic performance. How Does It Work? People are often faced with urges, desires, and natural tendencies that demand satisfaction. Giving in to such feelings is not always realistic, socially acceptable, or even healthy. In order to deal with such challenges, people must exert self-control in order to regulate their actions. Very often, we need to delay gratification of these urges until a more appropriate time and place. Even Small Actions Require Willpower Such self-management takes a great deal of mental effort, both cognitive and emotional. Some of these efforts require less willpower, while others demand much more. Even relatively minor acts of self-control can take a toll. In one study, participants who had to maintain a stoic facial expression during an upsetting movie displayed lower self-control on a subsequent task. It is when we use up our reservoir of available willpower that we become more vulnerable to giving in to temptation. Research on Ego Depletion In one fascinating experiment, a group of participants was presented with an assortment of products including magazine, pens, candles, and t-shirts. This group was asked how often they used each of the products in the recent past. A second group of participants was given a different task. They were presented with these same products but were asked to choose between two different options for each product. What the researchers were interested in learning was whether being asked to make all of these choices would have any impact on their willpower. In the next part of the experiment, participants from both groups were asked to dip their hands in icy water and hold it there for as long as they could bear. What the researchers discovered was that in the first group, the participants who did not have to make any choices held out longer than those in the second group. Making so many choices in the earlier task had resulted in ego depletion, making those in the second group more likely to give up sooner. A Few Examples There are many examples of how ego depletion can impact your behaviors in both large and small ways. What might happen if you find yourself low on self-control due to ego depletion? Giving Up on Your Weight Loss Goals Dieting is one of the most obvious examples of how ego depletion can sabotage your willpower. You might spend all day diligently sticking to your diet. You eat a healthy breakfast and lunch, and even resist the sweet snacks that a co-worker brings into the office during your mid-afternoon break. That night, as you arrive home from work, you find that your resolve has grown weak and you no longer have the self-control to stick to your diet. Because you have expended so much mental energy throughout the day resisting the urge to indulge, you have reached a state of ego depletion by dinner time. Instead of eating the healthy meal you planned, you order take-out from your favorite fast-food restaurant and spend the evening watching TV and snacking on chips. Less Likely to Help Others Ego depletion has also been shown to have an influence on what is known as prosocial behavior, or social interactions designed to help others. When people reflect back on their own behaviors, they sometimes experience feelings of guilt. It is these guilty feelings that sometimes lead people to behave in prosocial ways. Studies have shown that people who are ego depleted experience fewer feelings of guilt. In studies where people were induced into an ego depleted state, these participants were less likely to experience feelings of guilt and therefore less likely to engage in prosocial actions. Effects of Ego Depletion So what impact does ego depletion actually have on your day-to-day life? There are a number of ways that this phenomenon can influence your behaviors and decisions: Dieting Researchers have found that chronic dieters are more prone to ego depletion than non-dieters. Because dieters apply so much willpower to controlling their food intake, they become more prone to losing self-control in the face of temptation. For example, in one study participants (some who were dieting and some not) had to either sit next to a bowl of tempting snacks or far away from the desirable treats. When the participants were later given the chance to eat ice cream, those who were dieting and had to sit right next to the bowl of treats ate more ice cream than the other participants. Because they had to use so much willpower to resist eating the snacks, these participants depleted their self-control resources. Decision-Making Studies have also found that when shoppers experience ego depletion, they are more likely to make poor or impulsive purchasing decisions. The sheer number of choices that consumers face can lead to such depletion. Consumers are forced to weigh an enormous number of choices. This complexity leads shoppers to become overwhelmed and frustrated. Once a state of low self-control has been reached, buyers will purchase items based on simple criteria such as the cheapest item or the product linked to higher status. You have probably experienced this yourself if you have ever found yourself grabbing something off the shelf just because it was the lowest priced or a name brand that you recognized. Performance Mental toughness and determination are critical for athletic performance, but researchers have found that these tend to decline following difficult mental tasks. This suggests that the depletion of willpower due to mental demands can actually impair performance on physical tasks. For student-athletes, this might mean that taking a challenging exam right before a game might actually hurt their performance. Substance Use Research suggests that depleting self-regulation can also leave people susceptible to impulsive behaviors, including excessive or chronic alcohol consumption. This can be challenging for individuals prone to substance use or abuse. Exhausting self-control on unrelated tasks might then make it more difficult to say no when temptation strikes. Controversy The concept of ego depletion has taken some hard knocks in recent years. Some reviews of the research have suggested that the effect may be less powerful than previously believed. Several high-profile studies have not been able to replicate the results of earlier ego depletion studies. And some researchers have even argued that ego depletion does not exist at all. Further research is needed to better determine just how strong an influence ego depletion may have. Other researchers have proposed that ego depletion is not merely a result of draining limited self-control resources. Instead, they suggest that shifts in motivation, attention, and emotion play a critical role. In a study exploring this new theory, participants first completed a task designed to deplete willpower. Some of the participants were then told that the purpose of the study was to provide evidence supporting a new therapy that would help people with Alzheimers disease. Participants who had been given this incentive were motivated to perform well for the benefit of Alzheimers patients, leading them to outperform those in the control group. Motivation, the research suggests, plays an important part in ego depletion. What Can You Do? Ego depletion can have a serious impact on your motivation, success, and performance. So what can you do to minimize the effects of this drain on willpower and self-control? Improve Your Mood Researchers have found that being in a positive mood can have a beneficial impact on self-control. In some studies, ego depleted participants who had their moods boosted by watching comedy films actually performed just as well on self-control tasks as non-ego depleted participants. Change Your Outlook In one study, researchers found that participants who viewed themselves as tired were also more likely to experience ego depletion. Those who were able to step back and focus more on the big picture rather than just their own self-perceptions were able to reverse this effect. By focusing on your overall goals rather than just your feelings in the moment, you can minimize the impact of ego depletion. Think About What Matters to You Research has also shown that acts of self-affirmation can counteract the effects of ego depletion. Self-affirmation refers to any behavior or thought that boosts integrity of the self. One simple but highly effective form of self-affirmation involves expressing your core valuesâ€"the beliefs that you hold dear. During times when you are feeling exhausted and stressed, take a moment to remind yourself of the things that matter to you the most. A Word From Verywell Understanding ego depletion has important implications. Because self-control plays such a critical role in so many areas of life, finding ways to improve it can enhance overall well-being. People are often encouraged to marshal their willpower to overcome any challengeâ€"but sometimes the act of doing so can leave us lacking control later on when we really need it. If you feel like your resources are depleted, look for ways to boost your willpower during critical moments. Uplifting activities like enjoying a funny movie or focusing on the things that are important to you can give you a boost when you are feeling depleted. Our writers will create an original "Jimmy Cross in The Things They Carried" essay for you Create order In these work, OBrien describes the events that led him to the Vietnam War which is the same reason as to why he ends up being a soldier. In the entire character, Jimmy Cross reappears in various stories where his mental state keeps changing to adapt to the surrounding. During the overseas war mission, several members were killing. The author describes how Jimmys teammates under the Alpha Company succumb to death while in the battered field and the impact it leaves behind to the team. He points out the death of Ted Lavender who is a low ranking soldier who was shot while getting out of the bathroom. Lavender used to deal with his anxiety by smoking marijuana and taking a tranquilizer, and Jimmy Cross feels responsible for Lavenders death. When Lavender was killing, Jimmy Cross is in the course of distracting his thoughts of her college crush, Martha. Jimmy Cross feels for Matha were reveal in the love chapter whereby the author goes ahead to indicate that the character perfectly reveals the aspect of love. The reason I choose Jimmy Cross is the fact that he perfectly reveals several aspects of a soldier while in the battlefield. In the love chapter, Jimmy Cross was introducing while carrying the letter from her crush although the letters are not loved letters, and as a result, he wrapped them in a plastic bag and placed them in the bottom of his rucksack. The character perfectly reveals the aspect of patience and anticipation since after he had concluded his daily activities, he would get the letters and hold them with his fingertips and spend a lot of his time pretending to be reading the letters. While holding the letter, Jimmy Cross would imagine the romantic moments that he would be spending with her crush including the camping trips in the New Hemisphere. In some occasions, he would taste the flags of the envelope because she knew that her lips had passed there and he always wished that Martha would love him back just like he did. The thoughts of Matha by Jimmy seemed to occupy th e most significant part of his routine since he always wished that everything would happen as he expected both in his love life and in his career. Jimmy plays a significant role in the chapter since he reveals the aspect of love while on the battlefield and the impact it brings especially after the end of the battle. The reason OBrien includes Jimmy Cross in this chapter is the fact that he appropriately reveals the aspect of hump which he describes as carrying something The lieutenant is reveal as a person who humps his love for her college crush regardless of the mountains, swamps and the distance the lies between them. The intrinsic meaning of the term hump is to march or walk although, in this context, he brings out the burdens that are beyond the imaginations of the characters. Most of the soldiers in the Alpha Company humped photographs and in Jimmy Crosss wallet, he had photographs of his love which he kept wondering who had actually taken them. The photographs expressed frankness and competitiveness which made the lieutenant remember the moments that he has spent will her before getting in the battlefield. With regards to conducting his duties, Jimmy Cross used to be a platoon leader who used to carry maps, a compass, binoculars, codebooks as well as 45 caliber pistol that used to be loaded fully at all times. He also used to carry a strobe light and was typically responsible for the safety of his team members. Being a leader of his platoon, Jimmy Cross had the role of ensuring that his teammates remained safe in the course of the war and had the authority of conducting missions in the most appropriate manner. When Tim Lavender was shot dead while getting of the bathroom, Jimmy Cross feel guilty of the occurrence because he was constantly lost in his thoughts thinking about Martha rather than taking care of his fellow soldiers. This indicates that Jimmy Cross had developed a positive relationship with his team members to ensure that the mission was effectively undertaken. The feeling of guilt seems to have taken a larger part of Jimmy Cross thoughts since OBrien goes ahead. To indicate that twenty years after the death of Lavender, he still feels guilty of what took place in Vitamin Jimmy Cross plays a significant role in ensuring that his fellow soldiers have been assigned the appropriate duties with regards to their ranking in the line of service.

Good recruitment and selection policies will ensure a good industrial relation between employees and employers in an organization and also ensured workers are engaged for jobs suited to their abilities. A study made by Hsu Y.R, et al., 2000, found that it is important to have Human Resource managers on the board participating in the development of corporate strategy and that it is important to integrate Human Resource Management policy fully with corporate strategy. However, there are issues pertaining to recruitment and selection policies in industrial relation between employers and employees. In Anastasi, 1988, p-144; Bible, 1990, Cascio, 1987, p. 132; Hutfcut, 1990; Seymour, 1988; Thornton, in press) studies as cited in Smither J.W., et al (n.d) studies, it says that applicant perceived selection procedures as lacking in validity, or otherwise regarded as offensive or intrusive, are more likely to be viewed as unfair, unethical, or immoral issues resulting in more complaints and court challenges. By perceiving unlawful and unfair treatments by employers, workers motivation level to perform well will be lowered down and in turn will increase the costs and turnover rate in the organization. Besides that, Smither J.W. et al, (n.d), also mention that those workers who does not like an organizations policies, practices, or style is likely to go job shopping somewhere else. Changes in workforce demographics may also increase the difficulty to attract and recruit enough qualified workers. The types of benefits can be influence by the demographic factors as well. For example, medical coverage, life insurance, and retirement benefits will be more likely for older workforce. On the other hand, workers under 30 tend to be more interested in flexibility, technology, and training. Therefore, the policies provide for employees should not a one size fits al l approach; organizations can provide employees options for customizing a benefits package to match their individual needs (John C.R., 2009).The research made by Hsu Y.R., et al., (2000) on recruitment and selection policies in Taiwan found that the internal recruitment method are commonly used by the responding firm in Taiwan and may not only motivate workers to perform better and increase their commitment towards the organization, but may also improve their job security through upward or lateral career opportunities. In Sparrow, P. et al., (1994) study (as cited in Hsu Y.R., et al., (2000) mentioned that by using internal personnel sources effectively, it may also allow management to observe and assess the abilities of employees accurately given the accrued knowledge gathered over the employment relationship. This may avoid management from recruiting and selecting workers that are lack of knowledge, ability and experience to fit into the vacancy spaces besides helping the manageme nt to maintain good industrial relations with workers. There is still having some organization discrimination about the union. In the organizational for Economic Co-operation and Development there is declining in union density (Visser,2006; Peetz, 1998). Some of the companies have specific selection criteria to make sure they get staff that are culturally fit with what the companies culture and wish to avoid employees that have strongly unionized, preferring those from non-union (Rae Cooper, et al.,2009). This show that, in the early stage which is selection, organization already tend to choose those not union and those who are unions no chance to get the job. In addition, some companies recruitment policy have stated that they not to employ union members. At the recruitment meeting, human resource consultants and customer service managers have come out a question that whether the workers worked at company that was heavily unionized company can make a good team fit (Rae Cooper, e t al., 2009). Joining the non-union organization, workers are not protected under union and it will relate to more issues like unsatisfied on their working condition, payment, bonus, and others. Furthermore, this will lead to the unfair/unhappiness or workers. So, it cant maintain a good industrial relation between management and workers. There are suggestion that the varied and multilayered de-unionization tactics were not mutually exclusive, as the soft and informal human resources policies only hidden away the more clear and proper plan by employers to break collective representation at the workplace level ( Rae Cooper, et al., 2009). Multinational enterprise (MNE) has facing the problem that in different countries the Human resource procedures are different. Multinational enterprise facing difficulty to transmit their employee relations practices between contrary units operating in different countries. MNEs are important agents in transmitting industrial relations and other e mployment relations practices across national and cultural borders argued by Sparrow et al, 1994. The improvement in working conditions introduced by the collective agreement since 1989, lower the labor turnover. Organization should not be underestimated the importance of recruiting suitable individuals into an organization (Tony Royle, 1999). Recruit suitable employees into an organization can help increase the performance of organizations and lower down the turnover in the organizations. However, an organization is able to take benefit of employees who share common traits, kicking out those who may question managerial right, have notions of worker solidarity and an interest in trade union representation (Royle, 1998). 3.0 Content analysis Recruitment and selections policy plays vital important role in ensuring that the organization recruiting the qualified workers for job which are commensurate with their abilities. Recruitment and selection is usually central workforce development issues and challenges for the growing and smaller organization nowadays. The employers or human resources should always define the qualifications and experience that needed for the vacant job clearly by ensuring that the applicants skills or abilities that employed are fit with the job. There are always two primary issues that should be concerned by the recruiter or employer which are discrimination that due to the use of informal methods of recruitment and possibility that selection process being skewed by the initial recruitment phrase. Sometimes, discrimination is happen indirectly and unconsciously throughout the procedure. When discrimination occurs, the employer may miss the opportunity of getting the appropriate applicants that sui ted with the job. Thus, fair and equity recruitment and selection procedures need to be emphasized to ensure that all applicants have equal employment opportunity so that the company can employ the most suitable applicants for the job that match with their ability. In additional, there are three steps should be taken by the organization which are develop an up to date job description, develop effective recruitment strategy that concern the recruitment sources and recruiter and evaluate the recruitment strategy. Recruitment process and methods also need to check regularly and evaluate now and then. In order to ensure that the candidate engage to the job that suited with their abilities, the employer may explain term and conditions of employment to applicant before they are engaged for the job. By explaining the employment condition to the applicants, they will know more about the job scope and determine whether they are engage for the right job. At the same time, it helps to decre ase the tendency of industry relation problems occur at anytime. Besides, selection techniques also plays crucial role in getting right person for the job. The employers must always make sure that the selection is based on suitability for the job and ensure that the recruitment processes are carried out by the competent recruiters that are experience and knowledgeable in human resources field. Once the applicants are proceeding to selection phrase, the individual or panel interview, test, role play activity or reference check will be carried out. Job knowledge test helps to measure the understanding of applicants regard to the job (Compton, 1996). The organizations are encouraged to follow competencies model in recruiting and selecting the applicants as it seeks to identify abilities needed to perform job well rather than focusing on applicant personal characteristics. Moreover, the employers of organization are most likely applying internal recruitment method which is filling th e vacancy by transfer or promotions before recruit from outside. These can be supported by the example of recruitment and selection in Australia. In Australia, recruitment from within method is commonly practice by the organization (Nankervis et al., 2002).Filling the job vacancy through transfer or promotions will helps the organization to save up some additional recruiting, selecting and training cost as current employee knows the organization well. Advertising and recruitment agencies are also widely used by organization in Australian as these recruitment methods help to reach large audience of applicants (Gill, 2000). Furthermore, existences of recruitment agencies help the organization to match the applicants abilities with the job vacancy. During the selection phrase, the organization in Australia will emphasize on interview, tests and reference check. Interview is important step in selection (Compton, 1996) and common selection tools for many companies ( Huffcult Arthur, 199 4). In China, recruitment methods such as advertisement, job fairs, and corporate co-ordination are being practice by organization while for the selection techniques, Interview, tests and behavioral events are exercised by the organization. For example, increasing use of interactive role play during selection phrase helps to ensure that the applicants are engaged for the job that matched with their abilities. Selection phrase is important as it is process of choosing from group of applicants that individual best suited for particular position (Mondy Noe, 1993). Thus, the effectiveness of recruitment will definitely has impact on the efficiency of selection process. Jakob Bjurgert and Johan Karlsson from University of Gothenburg conducted a case study to get insight of hotel industry in Gothenburg, and examine whether internal recruitment could be a key success factor and if it solely could motivate employees. They investigate whether internal recruitment strategy sufficiency to be an incentive compensation system, and find out any difference of view on incentive system in the hotel industry, between the employees and the managements. They found that there are two different types of employees existing, where the first category employees were young and eager climbing the carrier ladder. For them, internal recruitment solely works as an incentive compensation plus motivation to stay in the company. Regarding to the second group, they were those mainly care about a stabile income and job security. Those employees simply less concern about promotion, but would rather appreciate a higher salary. Results from their evaluation also shown discrepancy between the managements and the employees view of the incentive system. An incentive compensation system existed in hotel did not works as motivational factors which from employees viewpoint, it was rather as a guideline to behave well service-minded manner. Merchant and Van d.S. (2007) described an incentive compensation system in terms of monetary and non-monetary rewards. Non-monetary rewards often consist of promotion, personal independence, rising in rank or position, autonomy, and recognition. Incentive compensation system aims to tie rewards to performance valuations. The system informs and reminds workers about what results are important, and motivates them to achieve these results. Incentive compensation systems are important for a firm in order to drive employees put more effort into their job. It is also personnel-related in terms of attracting the right person for the working place. Internal recruitment is one of the most popular incentive systems and become an old tradition in the hotel industry, as one of the non-monetary rewards. It is important for hotel industry in the service sector to have served minded employees. The industry is strongly dependent on their staff because they who are the frontline serve the customers and were important marketing tools. Motivation is needed as a force to push up performance. Through incentive compensation systems the hotel managers can design individual programs to motivate, retain and help attracting employees. (Karthik N.,Li M.,Zhaob X.,2006). However, increase the rewards can be devastating because the employees will then concerning more about the bonuses than to serve best quality to the customer.(Bjurgert J. Karlsson J.,2010) The work in a hotel is characterized by low status or low salaries, having intensive tasks and few chances to get promoted. Thus, motivation is one important tool to affect the behavior of the employees. To achieve motivated employees in the hotel industry, factors such as good salary a safe workplace, possibilities to get promoted and a good working atmosphere need to be fulfilled.(Simon T.Enz C.,1995). Zeithaml, V.A and Bitner, M.J. (2003) stated that before company recruiting a new employee, it is vital to analyze to see whether the potential employee is motivated to work in a s ervice minded way. The hotel industry has a high labor turnover, due to long business hour, and minimum wages offered. New recruitments and learning processes cost time plus money, and company also loose competence and productivity. Nevertheless high turnover help s companies to lower down cost by offering employee the minimum salary when they first enter the company. Thus it is interesting to examine whether it is possible to stimulate and motivate employees solely through internal recruitment. Employees have to be motivated for the right thing, which is connected to the companys goals and visions. Increase workers salary and increase their responsibility and recognition when worker being internally recruited. The management needs to know how to motivate their employees with rewards. It is also important that the employees know how they are judged and how they should effort to reach these rewards. HRdictionary.com defined internal recruitment as the process of filling vaca ncies by recruiting staff from insideÂÂ  the company . According to Dessler G. (2010), the advantage of internal recruitment is getting more commitment from current to the company. Morale may also rise if employees see promotions as rewards for loyalty and competence. Moreover, inside candidates require less orientation and training than outsiders. At Gothenburg, internal recruitment in the hotel industry is frequently practiced by large hotel chains, where the supply of workers is large, and most positions are standardized.(Bjurgert J. Karlsson J.,2010). Most of the job advertisements go through via internal and external portal, where both internal and external applicants have a chance to getting the job. Even though they also advertise externally, most positions are filled with internal candidates. This could be explained by the size of the company, and high supply of candidates. 4.0 Conclusion In this study we can conclude that a good recruitment and selection policies will ensure a good industrial relation between employees and employers in an organization and can also help to identify that job can suit with the skills and abilities of employee. A good recruitment and selection process can give employer and employee achieve win-win situation. Recruitment and selection processes are main factor can help organization get successful in their business. In order placing a right people in right job is very important. This is because when worker enjoy satisfaction with their job, while can improve performance of worker. Thus, it also will help to improve overall performance of organization. In the recruitment and selection process, employer needs to pay more attention and aware on the skills, abilities, knowledge, and experience of candidates. Employer should be aware those requirement of candidates, so that can fully apply in the organization and integrate in the organizat ion culture. Besides, those skills can effectively help in improve performance and profitability of organization. In additional, employee can also get fully satisfaction in their job because their skills can fully apply in job. In my opinion in the view point of employer, before start recruitment and selection process, employer must have clear idea about what kind of employee they want to seek and what kind of experience a potential employee to have had. It can help employer to raise success rate in the selection process by decreasing number of visibly under qualified or overqualified job applicants. Thus, employer also need to make sure what organization can offer will fix what job applicants desire such as salary, work hours, working conditions, working environment and so on. It can help in reduce the probability employee which recruited and will leave in the short period. Employer can provide recruitment agency or recruitment consultant to carry out company recruitment and selection process. Employer just needs to simple describe out what kind of employee they desire to get. After that, recruitment agency will help employer to make interview with all job applicants and then help them to find out the most suitable person. Next, in the view point of employee, before interview candidates should be ready to provide feedback of any kind of questions and prepare to answer different kind of questions during that interview. Before the interview, candidates need very clearly know about what kind of job they interested in. Furthermore, candidates can try to identify what kind of question may ask by employer and they need to how answer question to show their skills and abilities to get the job.

Essay Morality And Power - 930 Words

nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Thucydides’ written history of the Mytilenian Debate and the Melian Dialogue reflects the reality of a period where morality is dependent on the exercise of power and those who possess it. The main theme running through the course of these two debates is that those with the power to act as they wish inherently have the power to dictate morality. The arguments that decide the fate of the Mytilene are made not strictly on the basis of morality but on how their power allows them to exercise the moral course they choose. The Melian dialogue reveals how those in power can dictate morality in terms of self-interest. Both cases also demonstrate how morality is also a function of self-interest. He stated succinctly that â€Å"leadership depends on superior strength and not on goodwill.† (Thucydides, p.213) He believed that killing the Mytilenians was a question of safety for the empire; If you are going to give the same punishment to those who are forced to revolt by your enemies and those who do so of their own accord, can you not see that they will all revolt upon the slightest pretext, when success means freedom and failure brings no very dreadful consequences. (Thucydides, p.216) In this statement, Cleon argues that Athens has a moral duty to put down this revolt in the harshest way. He makes it a moral argument because it is in the self-interest of Athens, and any state, to protect its citizens. It is their moral duty. A Solution to a Problem Free Essays

Accomplishing goals and tasks with others is an arduous task. A course I was taking in college required research work, and to make the task attainable and undemanding with the limited time, the professor decided to divide the class into groups. Deciding on what topic to conduct research on was hard enough, but accomplishing the research work was the hardest. We will write a custom essay sample on A Solution to a Problem or any similar topic only for you Order Now Our research work required field work – school visitations, floating surveys, statistical calculations, and result interpretation. There were four of us in a group. The problem was we could not figure out how we would conduct the tasks due to our conflicting schedules and extra-curricular activities – we have different schedules, one works in the office, and one is busy with familial responsibilities. The problem was how can we conduct research and accomplish all tasks as a team, balance research work with other responsibilities, and assign tasks equally to all members of the team. During class, we sat together and talked about our problem. We set a time where all of us were available so we can talk about how we can go about conducting research. Once we were able to talk as a team, we laid out our schedules and our free time and listed all the tasks that we need to accomplish – chronologically, from simple to complex – in order to finish the research. Perhaps, this was the most important strategy that we employed in solving our problem, that is breaking down the main problem into simple ones in order for us to get a clear picture on how we can accomplish the smaller tasks to fulfill greater tasks. Another strategy was arranging our plan of action to make it fair and amenable to all team members. So we made it a point that everyone will be assigned simple to complex tasks and that all team members will consent to the task assigned to them. Moreover, the tasks were assigned to team members with related background knowledge and expertise. For instance, one member volunteered to do the statistical calculations because he was familiar with the chi-square). Once we settled the distribution and delegation of tasks, we talked about the importance of each task assigned to us to complete our research project. It was important for us to finish the research project, so everyone agreed to do his part responsibly. Finally, we made it a point to meet once a week in order to put together everything that we worked on individually. We also asked for each other’s contact numbers so we can communicate and confer with each other regarding the research. The most important approach that we employed to solve the problem was the planning and discussion process. It was important during that time to divide the research work into smaller tasks, and distribute and delegate these tasks in order to ensure that we can finish the project together as a team, while making sure that we do not neglect our extra-curricular activities. Moreover, our meeting as a team allowed as to communicate how we felt about doing each task, so the tasks were delegated to team members who were amenable to the responsibilities being assigned to them, while assuring the others that they are capable of finishing their duties. With these problem-solving strategies, we were able to finish our research project efficiently as a team. Â   How to cite A Solution to a Problem, Papers

Political Economy Propounded Society

Question: Describe about the Political Economy for Propounded Society. Answer: 1: The truth is the effectual truth as opposed to the imaginary truth usually propounded by the society. According to Machiavelli, effectual truth is factual by nature, without being influenced by the primacy of what is being considered to be good and just. Truth means the effectual truth, and it is truth by its own power, that is an impressive truth that may not be traditionally accepted, but is more powerful than the subtle truth. This is opposed to the idea of imaginary principals and values that no one has ever known . The imaginary truth and the effectual truth are the two main alternatives to truth. 2: Aristotle believes in wining more realistically, and hence his view on morality is highly distinguishable than the ethical view of Aristotle. Necessity replaces imagination for Machiavelli. Hence, although just like Aristotle, Machiavelli also believes in the stratification of the society, and the importance of having a leader, he does not emphasize on the importance of a leader possessing high moral values and principles in life . Aristotle believes that a leader will be able to lead and guide people, only if he is morally sensitive and virtuous enough. However, to Machiavelli, the prince may not necessarily have the highest principles, but he should appear to be a man of high virtues and principles before his followers . 3: The profession of good as defined by Machiavelli refers to the theological virtues and moral virtues that guide and determine the action of an individual. According to Machiavelli, a man willing to make a profession of good in all regards, will eventually ruin his happiness and prospect simply because not everyone around him is not necessarily virtuous. Machiavelli claimed that Platos hierarchical order of religions, has led to the world of corrupt modernity, which breeds nothing more than idleness and frustration, owing to the Christian prospect of a Heavenly world . 4: According to Machiavelli, the standard of peoples behavior can be based on the value one agrees to put on ones own self interests and motives, instead of placing the same on the well-being of others in the society. One must be able to anticipate that he may need to be evil in future, if the necessary demands the same from him. 5: Realism is not based on the imaginary truth of life, and hence it is important according to Machiavelli, it is important to understand what helps an individual succeed realistically. In the play Man D, the couple does not resort to a moral action, as they indulge in adultery, a sinful act, yet they achieve happiness. Hence, Machiavelli asserts that if one perpetrates a good act, refuses to be sinful, one may end up living childless. While on the other hand, if an individual chooses the evil path, out of necessity, and employs it for ones good, one can achieve happiness and personal satisfaction.

Economic Development and Peculiar Observations †MyAssignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about the Economic Development and Peculiar Observations. Answer: Introduction This WSQ framework is a national credentialing system and it helps in the training, assessment and development of the key competencies which companies try to find in their employees. These are based on the national standard developed by WDA (Singapore Workforce Development Agency). This paper will highlight how WSQ framework addresses the challenges which are brought out by VUCA environment. VUCA helps in retaining a clear vision against the judgments which are made with appropriate responses and flexibility (Toh, 2017). The Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifiaction(WSQ) system is a long-term education and training scheme which is designed for the matured workers and it complements with the prescribed education process of the students. This training programme is available to all workers and it does not involve any academic qualifications. Some key components of WSQ framework are the competency map, qualifications framework, curriculum ,competency standards, training and assessment guide (Reeves Reeves, 2015). The qualifications which are required for WSQ represents the various achievements which are necessary for the learning outcomes and this are generally identified as the set of competencies for different levels in the workplace. These qualifications cover multiple competency units and there are generally certain levels of WSQ qualifications. There are more than 30 Singapore WSQ and they are categorized mainly into two broad aspects i.e. industry and occupational skills and foundation skills. The courses are delivered through WDA Approved Training Organizations (ATO) or Continuing Education and Training Centers (CET) centers (Bennett Lemoine, 2014). The concept of VUCA was introduced in the early 90s and it was characterized by volatility, complexity, uncertainty and ambiguity. The concept of VUCA took off after the financial crisis of 2008 and 2009. The various concepts of VUCA described the business environment. Due to volatility, there may be certain increase in the four dimensions i.e. type, speed, volume and scale. Moreover, as a result of uncertainty it becomes difficult to predict the future (Chawla Lenka, 2017). Due to complexity, there may be widespread confusion and there is no clear connection between the cause and effect and thus it affects the organizations. In case of ambiguity, there will be lack of precision and the multiple meanings of the various terms will lead to confusion in the business environment. It becomes difficult to predict the future as the options are increasing exponentially and it is becomes difficult to predict the options. VUCA environment also focuses on what is possible rather than what is l ikely to occur in the future (Bennett Lemoine, 2014). The WSQ assesses, develops, trains and recognizes individuals on the basis of certain key competencies that the organizations or the companies look in the potential employees. This is designed to be more practical, affordable and accessible for the individuals to take the responsibility of their own advancements and careers. WSQ is regarded as a powerful business tool which is designed for the employees so as to maintain a skilled workforce (Ee Chang, 2015). It also enhances the advances and the competitive edge in business. WSQ also meets certain challenges of VUCA by following the national competency frameworks for the people and the management body. It also gives greater access to certain forms of modular competencies which are based on training and thus it leads to well recognized HR qualifications and certificates (Sung et al., 2013). WSQ is designed to benchmark the capabilities of corporate leadership and it provides a roadmap for the development and training of leadership (E vans, 2015). WSQ through the assistance of VUCA allows the individual to gain formal recognition of the various competencies within the recognized framework. The manpower cost can also be reduced if there is flexibility in the work options (Sarkar Sarkar, 2016). Certain practices can be adopted by the management and thus it will be beneficial for the employees. The employees do not valued or engaged if the labor market is given much more importance. Thus, it can be said that the competencies which are required in performing the various functions in the organization will reflect the deliverables and activities which are important for the organization to achieve so that they fulfill the goals. This also creates professionalism of the industries to progress the global competitiveness and also different avenues for the workers to enter different industries (Gaba Mishra, 2016). Conclusion Thus, it can be said that WSQ framework is designed for benchmarking the corporate leadership capabilities and it provides a roadmap for the leaders. It also enables the leaders and the managers to keep the information up-to- the- mark with the trends and processes through peer and structure learning. Therefore, formal recognition of the various competencies is important within the recognized framework. References Bennett, N., Lemoine, G. J. (2014). Why Do We Have a Juvenile Justice System?

Why Do We Have a Juvenile Justice System? You should be able to find a sample essay on Juvenile Justice in a variety of different ways. I just happened to stumble upon one recently in an online resource box, and it was worth my time to take a closer look at it.I can not tell you how many times I have seen the question 'Why do we have a juvenile justice system?' in class or the hallway. I know from experience that many people find this one of the most difficult questions for someone to answer, but if you look at it in a slightly different way, it actually makes sense. You see, when you ask a question like 'Why do we have a juvenile justice system?' or any other similar question, you are essentially asking a question about justice. So, just by looking at it in this light, the question becomes much more simple. It's one of those questions that goes along with justice: who you are, where you come from, how you became the person you are and why you are doing what you are doing. What is the ju venile justice system? It is a legal entity which is designed to protect individuals from the harmful acts that occur within the criminal justice system. Specifically, it is designed to protect juveniles when they are charged with felonies, misdemeanors and for less serious charges as well. So, the answer to the question 'Why do we have a juvenile justice system?' becomes something like: why is the juvenile justice system there? So, take your time with the question, give it some thought, and the answer is pretty simple. As a result, I believe the question 'Why do we have a juvenile justice system?' is actually a very worthwhile inquiry.
